Pjazza Teatru Rjal Branding

A visual identity for Pjazza Teatru Rjal, located in the ruins of the Old Royal Opera House in Valletta, Malta.

The theatre was recently restored by Italian architect Renzo Piano in a project to redevelop the Valletta area and create one of the most sought after open-air theatres in Malta. Combining the historic aspect of this site together with the open spaces it provides, Pjazza Teatru Rjal hosts from cutting edge art installations to popular concerts. When not serving as a centre stage for the performing arts, the location is open for everyone to enjoy and relax in.

The work includes the logo custom typography design, colour scheme, stationery, signage, guidelines and promotional material.

The identity sought reflects the theatre’s personality, that is modern, innovative and with a regal bearing. This was achieved through the use of a font which has been amended from the original to become more linear, alluding to the columns found on site and creating a contemporary look. It was also important to reflect the legacy of the place whilst positioning itself in contemporary society.
